Kathmandu
The Kathmandu valley has an exotic setting. A tier
of green mountain wall above which tower mighty snow
capped peaks surrounds it. It consists of three main
towns of great historic, artistic and cultural
interest: Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. The
Kathmandu valley covers an area of 218 Sq. Miles. It
is situated 1360 m. above sea level. The seven world
Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu valley designated by
the United Nation Educational, and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) are the highlights of the
valley. Nepal is the only country in the world where
seven world heritage sites within 20 km radius.
Among the seven sites two of them are dedicated to
Buddhist stupa are Shyambhunath and Baudha. Evan in
other sites there are many temple which are
dedicated to Buddhism and similar number of other
temples equally believed and worshiped by Buddhist
and Hindu. |

Patan
and Pharping
Patan Durbar Square complex, situated in the center
of Patan city, is a world heritage site Patan Durbar
has many famous sites and unique ancient newari
architectures. Krishna Mandir, Bhimsen temple,
Hiranya Varna Mahabhihar are just a few among the
temples offering you an ecstasy of paintings, wood
and metal carvings. The Sundari Chowk contains
exquisite samples of woodcarvings, stone and metal
sculpture. The palace has three main courtyards the
central and the oldest is Mul Chowk. To the west of
the complex are a dozen free standing temples of
various sizes and styles. Krishna Temple, Bhimsen
Temple, the Golden Temple of Hiranya Varna Mahavihar
and Sundari Chowk mark the architectural excellence
of its era. The Sundari Chowk with the sunken Royal
bath of Tusha Hiti contains exquisite woodcarvings,
stone, and metal sculpture. Patan Durbar Square also
houses a temple of Taleju Bhawani.
Pharping,
the village situated at south-west corner of the
valley on the way towards Dakshinkali temple is
inhabited mostly by Newars and Tamangs whom are
Buddhist by faith. The temple of Bajra Jogini is the
major attraction of this village. There are various
monasteries, recently built Stupas, temple of Shesh
Narayan and a cave of Padma Sambhawa among other in
the vicinity. |

Lumbini
Lumbini, the monument of world peace declared in
1998, is the birthplace
of Lord Buddha (Siddhartha Gautam- born in 623
B.C.). It lies in Rupandehi District in western part
of Nepal. The Enlightened One is the pilgrimage
destination of the world’s millions of people
faithful to all schools of Buddhism. It is also the
place were he gained enlightenment and became
famous. Here one can see Maya Devi temple, the place
where she gave birth to the lord, and an Ashoka
pillar which has inscriptions identifying the spot
as the birthplace, ruins of ancient stupas and
monasteries, and Pushkarni pond where Queen Mayadevi
took bath before giving birth. The Lumbini region
has been developed through Lumbini Trust, a non
governmental organization. Newer temples and
monuments are being developed by different foreign
countries. All temples found in this region form
this place a royal Buddhist pilgrimages destination.
The China temple located in Lumbini is a complex of
pagodas, prayer rooms and meditation cells developed
by the Buddhist Association of China. There is also
Myanmar Temple also known as Lokamani Cula Pagoda
which soars into the sky. The International Gautami
Nuns temple is also found here, which is a replica
of the Swayambhu stupa in Kathmandu. Many other
temples are currently under construction.
Lumbini Museum, Lumbini International Research
Institute, and Kapilvastu Museum (situated 27km west
of Lumbini in Tilaurakot) are other places to see in
this region. The Kapilvastu museum has ruins of
ancient capital of Sakya kingdom where the Buddha
spent his youth as Prince Siddhartha.

TILAURAKOT
(KAPILVASTU)
Tilaurakot, 27 KM west of Lumbini, contains the
ruins of ancient Kapilvastu, capital of the Shakya
kingdom where the Buddha spent his youth as Prince
Siddhartha. At Niglihawa (8 KM from Tilaurakot) and
Gotihawa (5 KM) can be found broken Ashok pillars
and other relics of ancient era.

DEVDAHA
Capital of Koliya kingdom and maternal home of
Mayadevi, lies 35 KM to the northeast of Lumbini
just off the Butwal- Narayanghat section off the
East-West highway of Nepal.
